Burning Man Phoenix Art Object was installed on 27.07.2026 in Kyiv |
The sculpture Phoenix by Ukrainian artist Oleksiy Say was installed in front of the building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. Phoenix is an eight-meter steel sculpture in the shape of a bird, symbolically referring to the Ukrainian trident. During the presentation of the work at the independent art event Burning Man 2023 it was sheathed in a wooden box - similar to the protective structures that in Ukraine are used to cover monuments. The Ukrainian team set fire to the box and so a metal Phoenix emerged from the fire as a metaphor for Ukrainian reality: what was supposed to destroy us instead revealed our essence. Phoenix in the American Black Rock Desert became proof that Ukraine is able to share its own unique experience and culture with the world and speak to it on an equal footing. The appearance of Phoenix in front of the Foreign Ministry building continues the life of the work in a new context. The object that spoke about Ukraine to an international audience at Burning Man in the language of contemporary art has now found itself next to an institution that represents Ukraine to the world every day. Phoenix is not only becoming a symbol of resilience but also a symbol of cultural diplomacy - Ukraine’s ability not only to endure and recover, but also to transform its own experience into new ideas that it can share with the world. The visual concept of the sculpture was created by artist Oleksiy Sai together with Bohdana Kosmina at the initiative of Vitaliy Deynega. The engineering and technical parts of the project were undertaken by the design bureau "Workshop of Miracles" with the support of the American charitable foundation UA Resistance Foundation. The producer and leader of the project was Alla Lopatkina. The story of Phoenix and other Ukrainian art objects for Burning Man also became part of the documentary "Castles in the Sand" - a project by Fozzy Media Group in partnership with the design bureau "Workshop of Miracles". The film documents the stories of Ukrainian artists and teams who conceived and realized large-scale works for Burning Man and presented Ukraine to an international audience through contemporary art. Remind you that during Burning Man 2026 from Ukraine will be presented two art sculptures: Real Love of artist Alexander Milov and Hero Armor from artist Zakhar Zakharov.
