Antonov AN-6 is a new Exhibit of Oleg Antonov State Aviation Museum |
The main external difference from the basic Antonov AN-2 aircraft is the presence of a weather observer's cabin at the base of the keel. Antonov AN-6 (at that time marked - "K") made its first flight on March 21, 1948 with the aim of reaching an altitude of 6000 - 8000 meters but unfortunately the basic Shvetsov ASh-62 power plant did not allow it to climb to the planned flight altitudes. In 1950 the designers modified the aircraft installing a new power plant with a TK-19 turbocharger of Treskin's design which ensured the preservation of power of 850 hp up to an altitude of 9500 m. The aircraft could stay in the air without refueling for 11 hours. On June 9, 1954 at the Svyatoshyn Airfield (UKKT) pilots Kalinin and Baklaikin set a height record for this class on Antonov AN-6 aircraft - 11 248 meters. Serial production of the Antonov AN-6 was introduced in 1956-1958. A total of 10 aircraft were produced of which only one remains today - with the serial number 110347315 manufactured in 1958. So the world's only unique copy of the legendary aircraft has taken its rightful place in the collection of Oleg Antonov State Aviation Museum. Unfortunately the long years of non-operation in Borodyanka Airfield (UKKB) where it was located significantly affected the condition of the aircraft. However the museum restorers will soon be able to back the beautiful appearance of the unique exhibit. So it is a new aircraft for the museum just a month after Antonov AN-2P joined the exhibition of Antonov aircrafts - Antonov AN-2, AN-2P, AN-24B, AN-24T, AN-26, AN-30, AN-71. Soon visitors and guests of Kyiv will have the opportunity to see this unique Antonov AN-6 in the exhibition when Oleg Antonov State Aviation Museum will re-open to the public again. Aviation enthusiasts and airplane spotters are welcome to Kyiv and Ukraine! Organizers Public Organization "Association for Development of Aviation of Ukraine", Oleg Antonov State Aviation Museum |
