Exhibition Sacred Treasures from Kyiv opened in Victoria and Albert Museum, UK |
Seven objects from the collection of the National Sanctuary "Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra" are being exhibited in London, United Kingdom for the first time. Among them are an icon, an altar Gospel book in a silver binding, a diskos, a silver-gilt chalice and other sacred items used during religious services. Created by Kyiv goldsmiths during the Baroque era, these pieces are part of the centuries-old artistic and spiritual tradition of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. The exhibition was launched to mark the 975th anniversary of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra and the 100th anniversary of the National Sanctuary "Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra". The exhibition was opened by V&A Director Sir Tristram Hunt, Tetiana Berezhna, Deputy Prime Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Minister of Culture of Ukraine, Maksym Ostapenko, Director General of the National Sanctuary "Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra" and Sam Harvey, Deputy Director of the British Council. The exhibition is the result of a collaboration between the V&A and the National Sanctuary "Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra," supported by the British Council and the Gilbert Trust for the Arts, with the participation of the Ukrainian Institute, the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and the Embassy of Ukraine in the UK. On September 15, 2026, the V&A will host an international symposium titled "Ukrainian Cultural Heritage and UK Institutions: Shifting Perspectives and Practice." Ukrainian and British researchers, curators, and cultural professionals will discuss how collections of Ukrainian heritage in the UK were formed, how their provenance, attribution and presentation are being re-evaluated today and how the war and international cooperation are transforming the way Ukrainian cultural heritage is handled. The centennial partnership between Ukraine and the UK is already taking shape through concrete joint projects - Exhibition "Sacred Treasures from Kyiv" is one of them.
