Exhibition Chernobyl: 40 Years Later take place on 14.09 - 18.09.2026 in Vienna |
The exhibition is dedicated to Ukraine’s experience following the Chernobyl disaster, international cooperation and modern security challenges amidst the war. The opening ceremony was attended by IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine Anatolii Kutsevol, European Commission Director-General for Energy Ditte Juul Jørgensen, European Commission Deputy Director-General for International Partnerships Marjeta Jager and Acting Head of the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management (SAUEZM) Volodymyr Feshchenko. The speakers focused primarily on the restoration of the New Safe Confinement and the preservation of the achievements resulting from decades of international cooperation. Rafael Mariano Grossi acknowledged the contributions of international partners and the collaboration with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). He announced increased IAEA involvement in supporting the technical aspects of the restoration work. He noted that this display is part of an exhibition originally presented in Kyiv in April, 2026 to mark the anniversary of the Chernobyl accident. Thanks to European Union support, a portion of this story is now being showcased in Vienna, Austria. Following the official proceedings, Serhii Tarakanov, Director General of the Chornobyl NPP, gave the distinguished guests a brief tour of the Ukrainian stand. The exhibition is designed as a journey spanning four decades of Chernobyl’s history - covering everything from modern challenges, international partnerships, the New Safe Confinement and radioactive waste management systems to the city of Pripyat and the technologies of 1986. The tour concluded with an interactive reconstruction of the SKALA system request device, the computer that controlled the Chernobyl reactor, allowing guests to literally immerse themselves in the technological environment of the Chernobyl NPP from that era. During the opening event, partners reaffirmed their continued support for Ukraine, while the IAEA outlined plans to step up its technical involvement in recovery efforts. The exhibition served as an opportunity to remind the international community that preserving the results of years of work at the Chernobyl site requires ongoing cooperation.
