In some historical documents Wooden Church of St. John the Merciful is referred as Church of St. Archangel Michael and built in XVII - XVIII century. According to another version the church was built with dedication to St. St. John the Merciful in 1766. Inhabitants of Yaremche tell the legend that the old iconostasis of previous wooden church in the village made on the money which was allocated by Ukrainian Robin Hood - Oleksa Dovbush. Yamna as a small village near Yaremche totaled only 47 yards so was unable to raise money for such an expensive iconostasis. They say that Oleksa Dovbush personally came to Yaremche to look at the iconostasis of Wooden Church of St. John the Merciful.
