Already in 1957 was created a prototype of the future Zaporozhets with codename "Moskvich-444" and was just five experimental cars. By 1958 it became clear that a fully loaded Moscow Small Car Plant facilities did not have enough workspace for the production of a new small-car. On November 28, 1958 USSR Council of Ministers adopts a historic decision on the organization at Zaporizhzhya Factory of Agricultural Machinery "Kommunar" production of a new car. Engine supplier appointed Melitopol Engine Plant. First became Zaporozhets ZAZ-965 (1961), followed by model ZAZ-966 (1966), ZAZ 968 (1972), ZAZ 968A (1973), ZAZ 968M (1979).
