Hydrofoil Volga was developed in 1957 by Shipbuilding Design Bureau of Krasnoye Sormovo Shipyard in Gorky (Nizhny Novgorod). There in 1958 the first hydrofoil was released. The design of this hydrofoil was numbered 343. Later offshore hydrofoils were built at Batumi and Gomel Shipbuilding Plants.

Hydrofoil Volga received the popular name"Krylatka" for its underwater plumage.

Most hydrofoils Volga type produced under the name"Strela" with their serial number before 1965 so"Strela" became the third name for these hydrofoils.

Hydrofoils Volga were equipped with M-652-U four-stroke gasoline engine with which the hydrofoil could go at speeds up to 60 km/h.

The total length of the hydrofoil is 8.5 meters with small cockpit for 5 passengers and 1 captain in three rows of seats. Long bow deck and a huge aft engine compartment provided the necessary carrying capacity and easy access to planing.

Interestion Facts about Hydrofoil Volga

Abroad Hydrofoil Volga was shown at a specialized exhibition in London in 1969 at Earls Court exhibition complex. The name"Volga Hydrofoil" was written on posters and the price per unit was 2500 British pound.

In August 1972 reciprocal gift from General Secretary of USSR Leonid Brezhnev to President of USA Richard Nixon arrived on board a Russian merchant vessel at Baltimore port. The gift was a high-speed, soft-and salt-water traveling Hydrofoil Volga.

Hydrofoil Volga has steering wheel and instrument panel very similar to car GAZ-24 Volga.
