The Bell of Kyiv Church of the Tithes Rings Again After 800 Years |
At the end of the Xth century the Church of the Tithes was founded by Prince Volodymyr the Great. It was the first stone Christian church in Kievan Rus. For centuries its bells summoned the people of Kyiv to worship, announced holidays, danger and important events. But in 1240 as a result of the Mongol invasion the church was destroyed and the bell was lost. The story continued only in 1937 when the prominent Ukrainian archaeologist Theodosius Movchanivsky found a fragment of the bell (nearly 60% was preserved) near the foundations of the Church of the Tithes. However the researcher was unable to continue his scientific work as in 1938 he was arrested on trumped-up charges and shot. Only a decade later was Theodosius Movchanivsky name rehabilitated and his legacy returned to Ukrainian science. To mark the 35th Anniversary of Ukraine's Independence the Ukraine WOW in cooperation with the National Museum of History of Ukraine and with the support of the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine recreated the ancient bell. A team of specialists from Ukraine, Netherlands, Germany and Portugal worked on the reconstruction for three months. Thanks to 3D scanning and acoustic modeling the international team of specialists recreated not only the appearance of the bell weighing 87.5 kg but also its sound. Thanks to the advice of European museum experts and the use of additional fragments (in particular, the crown of the Old Russian bell from Sakhnivka), it was possible to calculate the exact medieval bronze alloy. The new bell of the Church of the Tithes was made at the famous Royal Eijsbouts Foundry in the Netherlands. The recreated bell was installed near the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in Kyiv next to the showcase where the original old Kievan Rus fragment is exhibited. The project was implemented without state funding thanks to the companies Kyivstar and Farmak. Congratulations to Ukrainians with the 35th Anniversary of the Independence of Ukraine! Just remind that in 2019 Kyiv Church of Tithes of 1842 design, rebuilt by metropolitan bishop Eugene Bolkhovitinov, was appeared again due to AR Project Brama! Welcome to Ukraine!
