White Elephant Observatory Rebirth took place on Pip Ivan Mountain, Carpathians |
The event became a new stage in the long-term Ukrainian-Polish project to revive the White Elephant Observatory and transform it into a modern international research infrastructure open to scientists from Ukraine, Poland and other European countries. Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Andriy Butenko, Minister of Science and Higher Education of Poland Marcin Kulasek and Rector of the Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University Valentyna Yakubiv opened a new International Center for Collective Use of Scientific Equipment on the basis of the International Scientific Center "Observatory" on Mount Pip Ivan, at an altitude of 2,028 meters above sea level. A declaration of cooperation was also signed there and it was agreed to develop the Carpathians as an open space for science and education: scientific projects, exchange of students and teachers, support for young researchers. A telescope under a dome was installed in the observatory, which was designed specifically for difficult high-altitude weather conditions. Later, a robotic complex will be added to the telescope - and it will be possible to control it remotely. This is one of four high-altitude observatories of this level. The unique high-altitude location of the White Elephant Observatory creates opportunities for research in the fields of astronomy, meteorology, climate, ecology, atmospheric processes, water resources and biodiversity of the Carpathians. The center is open for joint work of Ukrainian, Polish and other European universities and scientific institutions. The observatory was restored by the Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University together with Polish partners. They will work here together, but the equipment is also open to others: any research team can submit an application. Astronomy is not the only direction here. Chornogora is a high-altitude flora and separate ecosystems, so you can study climate and nature here. There are also meteorological laboratories on site. The observatory was built back in 1938 as a scientific station of the University of Warsaw. Over the years, it was destroyed, and for decades a ruin stood on the top of Pip Ivan Mountain. Ukrainians and Poles restored it together. The project began in 2012 and was completed in 2026.
