On 26.01.2026 in Ukraine was presented Lynx Rescue and Tourist Drone Stations Project for the development of search and rescue and tourism infrastructure in Carpathian Mountains by architect Alina Sanina (Sanina Arch Club).
The project is designed for mountainous areas of Ukraine such as Bukovel, Slavske, Borzhava and Bakota.
Lynx drone and tourist stations are designed for storage, charging, maintenance and control of drones while at the same time they will serve as tourist magnets. Depending on the needs of a specific location they will house an observatory-planetarium, a scientific laboratory, an innovative media library, observation decks, helipads or hotels.
Located in hard-to-reach places and united into a single network, drone stations will monitor the environment, promote ecotourism and conduct search and rescue operations. Service drones will coordinate the logistics of tourists - deliver water, food and medical supplies to remote and high-altitude sections of the routes and carry out search activities.
First helicopters and in the future passenger flying drones will open a new type of mountain tourism where picturesque landscapes can be admired from a bird's eye view.
The project will be integrated with a mobile application through which tourists will register themselves to receive Lynx drone stations services. The Lynx application will provide information support regarding routes, their features and weather conditions. If necessary it will be possible to call for help through it by pressing the SOS button. Thus a new tourist infrastructure for people and drones will be formed.
Every year thousands of tourists get lost in the mountains. In the Ukrainian Carpathians alone more than 500 search and rescue operations were carried out in 2024: 579 people were saved. Tourists disappear due to sudden weather deterioration, lack of communication or choosing too difficult routes. Each such operation requires significant resources - dozens of rescuers, special equipment, dogs and helicopters. Sometimes searches last several days.
Traditional search methods - walking around the area, using vehicles or helicopters - are expensive and sometimes dangerous for the rescuers themselves. The use of drones makes search operations faster and more successful. Equipped with thermal imaging cameras, drones can survey large areas in a matter of hours, detecting heat signatures of people even at night or in poor visibility. They allow you to clarify the coordinates of the missing, assess the situation, deliver medicines, water or a thermal blanket to tourists and also broadcast audio instructions on what to do next.
The systematic use of drones in search and rescue operations will reduce resources, make rescue faster and more efficient. The redistribution of functions in the field of mountain tourism as well as search and rescue operations will require appropriate infrastructure.
The Lynx structure provides for a flexible and hybrid function - depending on the location, the station can be transformed into:
- an observatory or viewing platform in mountainous areas
- a hotel, restaurant or planetarium near resorts
- a mini-airport with a helipad at major transport hubs
The idea of architect Alina Sanina (Sanina Arch Club) is a great improvement of tourist infrastructure of Carpathian Mountains and hope will be implemented in the future with private and governmental funding support!
Welcome to Ukrainian Carpathians!
