On 26.08.2025 Leipzig/Halle Airport announced that Antonov will build a New Antonov Hangar for AN-124 Fleet Maintenance on an area of 24 000 square meters with plans to be completed in 2027.
The initiator of the project is Antonov Logistics Salis GmbH which has been active since 2006 - a subsidiary of Ukrainian State-Owned Company Antonov.
Currently six Antonov AN-124 Ruslan aircrafts are based in Leipzig/Halle Airport (LEJ, EDDP) for the SALIS (Strategic Air Lift Interim Solution) program and other oversize non-standard heavy weight cargo air transportation.
Base on Leipzig/Halle Airport plan on Google maps - a possible plot for the New Antonov Hangar is in its north part where already prepared the area of approximately 250 x 140 meters which is 35 000 square meters.
The New Antonov Hangar is 24 000 square meters so understanding its square shape it should be 155 x 155 meters which is a bit longer of the twice wing span of Antonov AN-124 Ruslan - 73.3 meters. It means that two Antonov AN-124 Ruslan could be maintained in the new hangar.
One question remains if this new Antonov Hangar is just a first stage of a much bigger project connected to unique Antonov AN-124 Ruslan air lift advantages or if it is just a reserve place for aircraft maintenance - future will show clear.
Anyway after Gostomel Airport (GML, UKKM) reconstruction in Ukraine there will be two bases for Antonov AN-124 Ruslan maintenance.
Start of such a huge investment project means very strong interest of European Union to keep fleet of aircrafts Antonov AN-124 Ruslan in their service and good future contracts for Ukrainian State-Owned Company Antonov.
