History of St Onuphrius Church

In 1754 Mykola Potocki opened a gymnasium at the monastery of Basilian Fathers in Buchach and ordered the monks to move from Rukomysh to Buchach Monastery. The monastery was to cease to exist but in order to preserve the monastery Governor of Rukomysh, Major of Potocki's army and Buchach Commandant Fadey Vengersky turned the monastery church into a parish church.

In 1768 on the site of the old monastery church Thaddeus of Hungary built a new stone church which was consecrated by the dean Father Hadzinski under title of St Onuphrius. The thickness of the walls of the temple reaches 1.5 meters which suggests that the church was to perform defensive functions.

For many years the gate of St Onuphrius Church was decorated with the figure of St. Onuphrius created in the late 1750s by the genius master sculptor John-George Pinzel.

After the revival of the monastery in Ukraine the sculpture is stored inside the temple.
