Also any tourist could visit the museum without the tour - just need to use audio-guide. Open-Air Hryvnia Museum Stands - History of Ukrainian money Exactly 25 years ago on 2nd of September 1996 the modern national currency - hryvnia was born. Today the fourth generation of the national currency with the most modern protective elements is in circulation. The monetary reform lasted for two weeks from September 2 to 16, 1996. During this period coupon rubles were exchanged for a new currency - hryvnia. On September 17, 1996 the hryvnia became the only legal tender throughout Ukraine. During these two weeks of 1996 National Bank of Ukraine put into circulation hryvnia banknotes worth over UAH 3.1 billion. Currently the country has a total of 594 billion grivna in cash including UAH 590 billion (2.9 billion items) in banknotes and 4 billion (13.8 billion items) in coins. Welcome to Kyiv and Ukraine!
