MiG-25 PDS Foxbat is new exhibit of Poltava Long-Range Aviation Museum


After 24.08.2020 in Poltava Long-Range Aviation Museum open new exhibit MiG-25 PDS Foxbat - supersonic interceptor and reconnaissance aircraft which has maximum speed of 3000 km/h.

Interceptor MiG-25 PDS Foxbat was transferred from Zaporizhzhya Repair Plant "MiGremont" and now assembled in Museum of Long-Range and Strategic Aviation.

The arrival of Su-17UM3 and MiG-29 from Odessa Aviation Plant is expected soon and there is also interest in receiving Su-24 / M from Bila Tserkva.

About Supersonic Interceptor and Reconnaissance Aircraft MiG-25

Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25 was created during Soviet Union time with goal of interception at very high altitude aircratfs Lockheed U-2 (Mach 0.715), Convair B-58 Hustler (Mach 2.0), North American XB-70 Valkyrie (Mach 3.1), Boeing B-47 Stratojet (Mach 0.97).

It was the main Soviet aircraft-interceptor of Cold War period (produced 1186 MiG-25 aircrafts).

On 31 August 1977 Aleksandr Fedotov set recognized absolute altitude record for a jet aircraft under its own power - 37 650 metres at Podmoskovnoye, USSR in zoom climb. The aircraft was actually a MiG-25RB re-engined with powerful R-15BF2-300.

Interesting Fact About MiG-25

On September 6, 1976 interceptor MiG-25 was abducted by pilot Viktor Belenko from Sokolovka, USSR to Hakodate Airport, Japan. After that situation for many years in Far East of USSR began to refuel aircraft at the expense of the aircraft did not have enough fuel to fly to a foreign airport.

Due to the incident with Viktor Bilenko Soviet government decided to deeply modernize the aircraft MiG-25. The new aircraft which became even more modern and efficient and was adopted under MiG-31 index.

MiG-25 stolen by Viktor Belenko was returned to USSR, it was sent for study to Gorky Aircraft Plant and then in disassembled condition - to Daugavpils Higher Military Aviation Engineering School. At Daugavpils Higher Military Aviation Engineering School MiG-25 was served as a fligth simulator and in the late 1980s it was written off and disassembled into souvenirs.
