Lehedzyne Battle Historical Information

On March 7-8, 1919 took place battles between units of Ukrainian People's Republic Army and Red Army on Talne - Uman route near villages of Talianki and Lehedzyne.

Ukrainian regiment named after Ustim Karmelyuk covered the city of Uman from onset of Bolsheviks from the side of Talne.

In the morning of March 7, 1919 Red Army pushed Karmeluk horse-drawn-out reconnaissance from Talianki starting a massive round-the-clock attack on Lehedzyne which units of Ukrainian People's Republic Army successfully repulsed. However during the night battle Red Army managed to enter the village from the side of Vyshnopil in the rear of Karmeluk unit and destroy their 1st and 2nd hundreds.

The commander of the 1st hundred Janson about 2 hours with a machine gun "Maxim" held back the enemy allowing Cossacks to retreat to the village of Dobrovody (wounded himself was captured).

This event despite defeat illustrates Cherkassy region as a place of a fierce struggle for Ukraine independence during the period of national liberation struggles of 1917-1921.
