Kosiv Painted Ceramics is included in UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage |
This decision 10.b.40 was made during the meeting of the session of Intergovernmental Committee for Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Kosiv pottery includes various crockery, children's entertainment, souvenirs, oven tiles and decorative tiles is decorated with drawings of various kinds: stylized images of flowers, trees, animals - horse, deer, bear, birds, various human professions - hunter, warrior, mailman, musician, saints - most often St. George and usual household scenes. The technique of making Kosiv Painted Ceramics is a painting on white clay and dried blank. After the first firing in the pottery furnace the blank is painted in green, brown, yellow and rarely blue inks. Next the blank is covered with transparent glaze and fired for the second time. This technique is unique and only one in the world. Kosiv ceramics are distinguished by "paint tears" - small stains of paint. Kosiv potters and Department of Art Ceramics of Kosiv College waiting for more than 6 years to confirm the uniqueness of Kosiv Painted Ceramics in the world. In 2012 Kosiv Painted Ceramics along with some other art was nominated to UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity but only Petrykivka Painting list received approval. Another intangible cultural heritage of Ukraine listed in 2016 in ICH is Cossack’s songs of Dnipropetrovsk Region. Welcome to Kosiv, Ivano-Frankivsk region!
