Dutch Windmill restored in Pustovity | Built in 1902

On 3rd of November 2017 in Pustovity village, Kiev region was opened Dutch Windmill - restored unique windmill designed according to Dutch model.

Dutch Windmill was built at the beginning of XX century by a local peasant Kuzma Driga. There were three windmills in Pustovity village. Originally Kuzma Driga built an ordinary mill - in the place where the village now has a pantry and then when he returned from Holland in 1902 built a large windmill which today stands in the village center.

Kuzma Driga visited Europe where he worked as a miller on farms of Holland then he made the decision to built own windmill. When he returned home he buried a 15-meter pillar and according to its shadow carried out drawings and calculations of its design directly on the ground.

In the development of the project were involved other masters. The hill for the windmill was piled up by citizens of whole village. In the evenings dances with music were arranged for tamping down the ground. Everything was done with love.

When Dutch Windmill was ready people from all over came to see the amazing work of Pustovity village craftsman.

Later when the sons grew up Kuzma Driga built another third mill. People were driven to grist the grain from Karapish, Zelenok, Leshchinka and even from Kagarlyk and Bohuslav. And in all three windmills everything was put in sacks because they waited for the wind. When the wind was blowing wings of windmills working well. In the large windmill wings turned themselves by power of wind. The wings of small windmills are turned with the help of special devices.

In 1926 Kuzma Driga died and his son was deported to Urals. The unique windmills wanted to burn and disassemble but the locals defended them. Now the windmill is completely restored. It has kept all the original mechanisms.

Dutch Windmill of 1902 year will become one of unique tourist attractions of Kiev region for Dutch tourists in Ukraine.
