Kiev Chestnuts History In Kiev there were no chestnut trees until 1839 - 1849 when was constucted Bibikovsky Boulevard in honor of Governor-General of Kiev - Dmitry Bibikov (currently Taras Shevchenko Boulevard) by plans of architect Vikenty Ivanovich Beretti. First chestnuts were planted on Bibikovskiy Boulevard but the trees were not liked by Tsar Nicholas I so during the night all chestnuts were uprooted and replaced by pyramidal poplars which gave the boulevard more majestic appearance. Uprooted chestnuts were picked up and planted in their yards by citizens of Kiev that led to spread of chestnuts all over the city. In Soviet period chestnuts on Khreshchatyk street appeared after 1945 when was made restoration of the city after World War II. Chestnut was the main element of Kiev coat of arms. It still adorns the box of famous Kyiv Cake - business card of Kiev. Kyiv Cake is a brand of dessert cake made in Kiev since December 6, 1956 by Karl Marx Confectionery Factory (now Roshen Corporation). Walking along Khreshchatyk street is an excellent opportunity to enjoy the spring in Kiev and the flowering of chestnuts. Organizers
