Uman International Airport going to build by support of USA investors


On 26th of December 2016 Minister of Economy of Ukraine Stepan Kubiv discussed about the future of Uman International Airport with USA investors.

During negotiations talked about plans of transformation of military airfield in Uman to new Uman International Airport which will operate in civilian purposes. Investors are willing to invest in the project about 130 million euros.

Uman International Airport logistically very convenient as it is located in the center of Ukraine where cross all international flight routes. Also Uman has become more and more attractive for international pilgrims who come to visit Tomb of Rabbi Nachman of Breslev. For local and international tourists it will be more fast way to get to popular tourist destination - beautiful Sofiivka Park.

History of Uman Airport

Military airport in Uman was built on orders of NKVD and during occupation of Poland in 1939 the airport in Uman used by Air Forces of Red Army as an auxiliary.

On 1st of August 1941 Uman airport was captured by Wehrmacht military units and soon the first runway with dimensions of 1200 x 75 meters was built.

In 1950 it was built the second runway with dimensions of 2500 x 50 meters. After construction of new runway Uman airport received status of the first category and could take on its runways aircrafts weighing up to 100 tons.

Later Uman airport was re-equipped for 202th Training Air Base where young pilots learned to fly MiG-17, 19 and 21. Ukrainian pilots trained their skills of pilotage on airplanes L-39. Soon 202th Training Air Base was disbanded at the end of 2002. Now Uman airport is included in submission of Military Unit A2614 of Armed Forces of Ukraine.

In 2011 Government Administration of Cherkassy region has proposed construction of a passenger international airport in Uman which will make huge contribution in development of Ukrainian tourism.

Historic Visit of Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler to Uman Airport

On 28th of August 1941 in Uman airport landed airplane German Focke-Wulf Fw 200 Condor that flew to Uman two dictators of Europe - Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini.

During the flight to Uman Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini was accompanied by Joachim von Ribbentrop (German Foreign Minister), Heinrich Himmler (Head of Schutzstaffel), Wilhelm Keitel (Field Marshal), Martin Bormann (Secretary of Hitler), Filshppo Anfuzo (Italian Ambassador in Berlin) and Vittorio Mussolini (son of Benito Mussolini).

In Uman airport Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini welcomed by German troops. After a general report of Field Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt about situation at the front and fighting near Uman they had breakfast and drove to greet Italian divisions.

At parade place German troops were in full readiness according to the order but Italians did not come. Their trucks are stuck in Ukrainian humus after a heavy rain. So Adolf Hitler from balcony of former hotel "Regina" (Sovetskaya st., 10) gave German troops a little speech.

Without waiting Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini drove to meet Italian troops on the march. The meeting took place near Lehedzyno village where dictators saw terrible picture of Italian exhausted soldiers. As a welcoming ceremony foiled Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini without delay flew back to Poland from Uman airport.
