On 21st of January 2016 was completed the first phase of construction of a new double track Beskid Tunnel on route Beskid - Skotarske in Carpathians.

Currently completed the most difficult part of construction work - top ledge of tunnel. The new two-way Beskid Tunnel will replace existing single track which was built in 1886. It is limited by velocity of 15-40 km/h and remains the only "narrow" place between Chop and Lviv. In the new tunnel trains can reach the speed of 60-70 km/h so it will increase capacity of trains passing through the tunnel from 47 to 100 pairs per day.

Beskid Tunnel has a strategic importance as is the fifth corridor from Italy to Ukraine. Today over 60% of cargo traffic go through Beskid Tunnel across Ukrainian western border including transit.

Total construction cost of the tunnel is estimated at nearly 2.2 billion UAH. The project is making of loan of European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and European Investment Bank (EIB). The budget of the first phase of construction was 39.71 million US dollars of loan of EBRD. Now it is going preparation of documents for the first tranche in amount of 5 million euros of total amount 55 million euros of loan from EIB.

The length of Beskid Tunnel is projected 1764.5 meters, depth of laying is 781-807 meters above sea level. For construction of the tunnel selected combination of explosive and heading methods. For reasons of safety in tunnels provides 3 connecting evacuation tunnels between the old and the new tunnels each 22 meters long, 49 niches and 12 cameras.

The new Beskid Tunnel will be equipped with modern working and emergency lighting, ventilation, video surveillance, control sensors to determine the level of harmful gases and constant monitoring of internal state, fire protection and corrosion protection system.

It is expected that construction work will be completed in fourth quarter of 2017 and the first train will go through the new tunnel in second quarter of 2018.
